What to Expect: Candidacy and Fitting TransEar


If you have a normal ear canal on the deaf side and good hearing on the other side, TransEar should work well for you. The “good ear” should show no greater than 30 dB of sensorineural loss through 2000 Hz. (See Indications for Use for full details.)

Your hearing healthcare professional will evaluate your hearing in both ears and will compare that against TransEar’s fitting range. Each patient's physiology and medical conditions may also be factors in the fitting.

Important note: Because there may be an underlying condition requiring medical treatment, it's important to report the onset of SSD to a medical professional such as an ENT doctor or otologist for a thorough examination. Your doctor may in turn work with a hearing healthcare professional to determine if TransEar is appropriate for your type of hearing loss and medical considerations.

Once it is determined that you are a candidate for TransEar, your hearing healthcare provider will take two deep canal impressions of the ear to be fitted with TransEar. We use those impressions to make a custom shell for your ear canal. We embed a miniature oscillator inside the shell, in a position where it will make good contact with the boney portion of your ear canal.

When you return to your provider's office for your fitting, your provider will program the BTE processor according to your preferences, what's received by the better ear's cochlea, and various listening environments.

Additionally, your provider will likely make slight modifications to the fit of the shell based on your feedback. The TransEar will feel very snug, because a tight fit is necessary for good bone conduction. (It is a tighter fit than a traditional air conduction hearing aid, but it should not be painful.) Based on your feedback, your provider can lightly sand the shell in his or her office to take care of specific points of discomfort. The first couple of times you insert the TransEar, applying a lubricant specially made for hearing aids, such as Miracell® or Oto-Ease® can help.

Please note that it may require a couple of return visits to your provider to fine-tune the fit and/or the programming. It's a very precise process due to TransEar's unique function, and further, your brain will likely need some time to adjust to the new sound, so please be patient.
